CHAPTER 13

***HAYDEN***

I started out the day with a smile on my face that nothing could wipe off. Not only had I gotten the chance to spend almost the day with Monica yesterday, but Hensley and Jett found out about us hooking up, and neither one of them was even the slightest bit upset about it. In fact, everyone seemed happy and at ease. Even Monica was more relaxed about things now, and I definitely felt better about it. I finally felt like I was ready to tell her my feelings.

I decided to get through my workday—which was jampacked with meetings and client calls and then tell her later tonight. I would text her around lunchtime and ask her if she could meet up for drinks after work so we could talk.

I was distracted all morning again, but this time it was in a good way. Instead of being stressed about the emotions swarming my head, I was ready to open up, which I had never done with any woman before.

But I didn’t even have to wait until lunchtime to text Monica, because much to my surprise—she showed up at my office. At first, I was a bit shocked she was there. It seemed pretty weird that she would randomly show up at my place of work. I mean, I hadn’t even told her the name of the company I worked for.

I saw her walking in through the large glass windows, and I stood up from my desk to go see her. She was carrying something huge and awkwardly shaped in her arms, and from the looks of how much she was struggling with it, it looked like it was pretty heavy, too.

“Monica!” I said with a giant smile as I walked up to her.

I could tell she was just as shocked to see me as I had been to see her. Her mouth dropped open, and she nearly dropped what she was holding.

“Hayden? What are you doing here?” she asked.

“I work here.”

Her eyes widened, but not in a good way. They widened the way that an animal in the wild would right before it was chased down by a predator.

“Are you okay?” I asked, wondering why she suddenly looked like she was going to be sick. “Do you need help carrying that?”

All the blood had drained from her face, and she stared back at me as pale as the moon. “Yeah, I’m fine,” she said. “Sorry, I guess I was just surprised to run into you. I knew you worked at a company like this one, especially since we’ve talked at length about being in like-minded businesses. But I just didn’t know that you worked for this particular one.”

“What are you doing here?” I asked.

“Um—just delivering a package, that’s all. Then I need to leave and go get back to work.”

I reached out to take the mammoth package from her arms, but she took a step back before I could reach it.

“It’s okay. I’ve got it,” she said as she gave me a less than a genuine smile.
